The land of saris, traditions and possibilities...
...Sri Lanka, often referred to as the "Pearl of the Indian Ocean," is a fascinating country full of contrasts and mysteries. From breathtaking landscapes and a rich Indian culture to culinary delights like curry, cinnamon, and oriental tea, Sri Lanka is a true paradise for travelers. This small island paradise offers countless opportunities for exploration and discovery.

Nature and National Parks
One of Sri Lanka's greatest attractions are its national parks, which are home to impressive wildlife. Yala National Park and Udawalawe National Park are two of the most famous and offer the opportunity to observe majestic elephants in their natural habitat. Sri Lanka's elephants are not only a symbol of the country, but also an important part of its culture and history. On a safari through the vast savannas and dense forests of the national parks, visitors can experience the diversity of flora and fauna up close.

Gemstone mines
Sri Lanka is world-famous for its gemstones, especially sapphires. The island is considered one of the most important deposits of many precious stones and attracts mineral collectors and jewelry lovers alike. However, Sri Lanka's mines are the most closely guarded. These are not easily accessible, and some are even specifically designed to showcase them to tourists. The actual mines are scattered throughout the country. Here, too, a distinction is made between primary and secondary mining. However, most precious stones in Sri Lanka are still extracted by hand using primary mining methods.

Trade in Sri Lanka
Very inconspicuous, but often very good value for money! The trade in precious stones in Sri Lanka often takes place publicly, in side streets and parking lots. There are a few fixed meeting points where dealers regularly meet. The trade usually begins at the age of 16-18, within families, and at first glance seems very unlikely.

Grinding shops, designers & jewelry studios
In Sri Lanka's larger family businesses, you'll find a wide range of crafts. Mining takes place on weekends, design and handicrafts during the week, and sales are also carried out in open craft shops. Life in Sri Lanka as a gemstone miner can be quite hectic. One thing is certain, however: the Sinhalese know their land and their craft very well and remain true masters of it to this day.
