Kunzite is a variety of the mineral spodumene and belongs to the pyroxene family. It was first discovered in 1902 and named after the American jeweler George Frederick Kunz. Kunzite occurs in various colors, but the most common color is a pale pink to violet. The most significant deposits are found in Brazil, Madagascar, Afghanistan, and the USA.

Kunzite has a Mohs hardness of 6 to 7 and is characterized by its transparency and brilliance. Its delicate pink color is due to manganese ions embedded in the crystal lattice. Due to its light sensitivity, kunzite tends to fade in direct sunlight, so it should be handled with care.
